Mark is an automotive structure technical expert with a broad design development background and a solid understanding of engineering first principles.  His structures experience spans twenty-eight years in the industry, including leading roles in; Body System Architecture, Structural Integration Architecture, Body Structure Strategy, Body Structure Release Engineering, and CAE Simulation.  Mark transitioned to independent consulting after separating from General Motors in October of 2023.

Battery Electric Vehicles: Mark led the body, chassis, and battery structure strategy development for many of GMs recent & future BEVs.   Foundation for this guidance was a firm understanding of automotive structure fundamentals, a unique understanding of how those fundamentals are affected by the BEV configuration, and a never ending interest in reverse engineering competitive structure.  Understanding the relationship between vehicle requirements, efficient structure, and vehicle-level cost & mass efficiency enabled Mark to advocate for efficient execution in vehicle architecture activities and in presentations to senior leadership.

Incorporating CAE: Mark has been deeply involved in the process of developing structural performance through the use of CAE simulation.   Specifically, how to harness a partnership between CAE engineers & Release Engineers to codevelop winning solutions & to identify ‘better designs’ earlier in the development process.

Cutting Edge Structural Solutions: Mark has experience integrating cutting edge structural solutions such as mixed metal and large castings.

Performance Enhancement Initiative Leadership: Mark led GM product engineering's multi-million dollar development of roof strength performance enhancements for 13 vehicle platforms; guiding both the design solutions and their implementation.   He also led GM's initiative to implement enhancements for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's 'Small Overlap Frontal' test and was an original contributor in understanding the physics of this test.

Recalls and Field Action Investigations: During a critical time for General Motors, Mark joined a group that gathered & analyzed data and prepared & presented case summaries to a senior leadership decision board.  Here, Mark interacted with experts from disciplines including; Service, Safety, Legal, and Manufacturing.
